Focus and Scope
Educational Theory is a quarterly publication owned and produced by the University of Illinois. The general purposes of this journal are to foster the continuing development of educational theory and to encourage wide and effective discussion of theoretical problems within the educational profession. In order to achieve these purposes, the journal will be devoted to publishing scholarly articles and studies in the foundations of education, and in related disciplines outside the field of education, which contribute to the advancement of educational theory. It is the policy of the sponsoring organizations to maintain the journal as an open channel of communication and as an open forum for discussion. All articles and all editorials appearing in it are to be regarded as the expressions of the viewpoints of the particular writers and not as the official position of Educational Theory, the John Dewey Society, the Philosophy of Education Society, the College of Education, University of Illinois, or the College of Education, University of Illinois at Chicago.
Section Policies
Main Contents
Footnotes should be numbered within the text in accordance with the format given in the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed. Name/date citation styles are not consistent with our journal format. For examples of the appropriate footnote style, refer to articles in this issue. Articles accepted for publication but not in conformance will be returned to the author for revision. Manuscripts should not exceed 7500 words, including footnotes.
Afterwords
"Afterwords" is a forum for commentary and discussion about articles published in EDUCATIONAL THEORY. Essays should be short and to the point (approximately 750 words). Submitted manuscripts will be reviewed and selected for publication by the Editor. The primary criteria that will be used for selection are: (1) Is this topic likely to be of broad interest to the readers of the journal? (2) Does this comment, criticism, or clarification advance the discussion in theoretically significant ways? and (3) Is it written in a manner that is respectful and constructive?
Peer Review Process
No editorial consideration will be given to manuscripts that have been published elsewhere or are under review for publication elsewhere. (Rare exceptions may be warranted by special circumstances, such as the substantial expansion or revision of previously published material.) Manuscripts are sent out for anonymous review (that is, reviewers do not know the identity of authors, and authors do not know the identity of reviewers). To preserve the advantages of anonymous reviewing, authors should avoid self-identification in the text as well as in the footnotes of the manuscript.
